Our Story
Founded by Tamara Dyke-Compton—professor, choreographer, author, yoga teacher, and lifelong dancer—The Mindful Dancer grew from her more than two decades of experience exploring the transformative power of movement.
Through her work teaching at the University of Arizona and Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp, leading yoga classes, mentoring young artists, and writing about mindfulness, Tamara has remained committed to helping people move through life with greater awareness, resilience, and joy.
Throughout her career, Tamara witnessed the extraordinary dedication dancers bring to their craft, alongside the challenges that can come with it—perfectionism, injury, stress, burnout, performance anxiety, and the constant pressure to achieve.
Her own journey as a dancer led her to yoga and mindfulness, transforming not only the way she moved, but also the way she taught. Yoga became a pathway to greater awareness, compassion, recovery, and connection, while mindfulness offered practical tools for building emotional resilience and sustainable artistic practices.
These experiences became the foundation for The Mindful Dancer, a textbook co-authored with Kristin Miller that explores mindfulness, emotional resilience, artistic longevity, and practical tools to support dancers throughout their careers.
From the book, The Mindful Dancer Movement was born—a community empowering dancers, movers, educators, and artists through mindful movement, yoga, education, and shared resources.
Today, Tamara continues to share a simple belief: dancers should not have to choose between excellence and well-being. By caring for the whole self, artists can build stronger, more sustainable, and more fulfilling lives in and beyond their practice.
